The First Part Last by Angela Johnson

Genre: Problem Novel

Honors: YALSA Top Ten; BCCB Blue Ribbon Book; Michael Printz Award/Honor Book; Booklist Editors' Choice; Coretta Scott King Award/Honors; ALA Best Book for Young Adults

Review: Bobby, a sixteen year old boy living in New York City, is not like other teenagers his age.  He is raising his baby girl, Feather, all alone!  Where is Feather’s mother and how will Bobby and Feather survive in the city on their own?

Opinion:This is a unique and relevant book. Rarely do readers have the opportunity to hear the perspective of teen fathers. Bobby is lonely and overwhelmed yet tries his best to be responsible. Many young adult books about teen parenting are written from the perspective of the teen mother, but The First Part Last allows readers to empathize with the plight of a teen father and his baby girl.
