The Mysteries of Beethoven's Hair by Russell Martin & Lydia Nibley

Genre: Science, History, Music

Honors: NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science

Review: It is common knowledge that Beethoven was plagued with many health problems and that he went deaf in his later years.  In fact, it is considered an amazing feat to have composed such remarkable pieces of music with his inability to hear. What is not commonly known is why Beethoven had so many health issues and why he lost his hearing at a relatively young age.  Thanks to a lock of Beethoven’s hair combined with modern science the mysteries have been solved and we can come even closer to understanding this musical genius.   In The Mysteries of Beethoven’s Hair the reader is taken on a historical journey following a lock of hair cut from the one and only Beethoven.   Each chapter reveals a little bit more about Beethoven and the journey of his hair, which keeps the reader interested and intrigued.  This well written, non-fiction account of a great man, that has contributed immensely to the human race, is a must-have in young adult libraries.

Opinion:  This is one of my favorites.  This book was so well-written and keeps the reader engaged the entire time.  I like how it not only explores Beethoven's life, but the many historical events leading up to the auctioning of his hair. I learned so much about Beethoven and have an even deeper respect for his music.  I highly recommend this book!

Ideas: Have a Beethoven Appreciation Week in the library.  Play a variety of Beethoven's music in the library.  Display books and other media relating to this composer and to other classical composers.
