Honors: Margaret A. Edwards Award
Review: In the sequel to Weetzie Bat, Witch Baby, an odd witch-like child adopted by Weetzie, and the child of My Secret Lover Man, Weetzie's boyfriend, is an interesting and well-developed character. She has purple eyes and messy black hair and a very odd demeanor. Despite these weird characteristics, the reader develops tenderness for Witch Baby as she struggles with her feelings of abandonment and isolation. She wants to be loved and to belong, yet always feels like the rejected outcast of the family. Even Witch Baby's brief romance ends in abandonment. Witch Baby represents those people that feel alone and out of place even in their own families, yet ultimately brings hope to readers when she finds her talents and starts to understand that being different can be a valuable asset to cherish.
Opinion: While not as groundbreaking as Weetzie Bat, this book did not disappoint. I enjoyed Witch Baby's character and could relate to some of her feelings of isolation. I believe she is a good representation of the uncertainty and loneliness that often accompanies adolescence.
Ideas: This is a great book for reluctant readers and those that feel like they are on the outskirts of the high school scene.
